Fabian Miller’s recent works pairing rectangles and squares of complementary colours – such as Orange Aqua. Late Summer (2009) – owe a debt to, but are also a development of, Albers’s Homage to the Square paintings and prints begun in 1949. For Albers, as for László Moholy-Nagy during the same period, the technology available at the time prevented a full exploration of the possibilities of colour abstraction in photography. While Moholy-Nagy made attempts to create abstract colour photographs, he felt that, without apparatus on a larger and more scientific scale, it was difficult fully to resolve them. For him, the light-sensitive layer of photographic paper was a clean sheet on which music-like notes could be written in light. In the context of an article defending abstract art, he made the following comments on pre-Renaissance painting: ‘It admitted that it had been painted to express moods, devotion, wonder, and ecstasy with the sensuous and emotional power of colour. It emphasised less the 'story' and more the vital performance of colour to which the spectator could react directly without reasoning and conscious analysis.’ Fabian Miller’s works realize Moholy-Nagy’s desire for unleashed photography, a ‘vital performance of colour’ that appeals to the heart as much as to the head. Unlike Albers’s works, Fabian Miller’s display an incandescent quality of light, which seems to emanate from the images. Where two colours meet, they create their own shape, appearing to vibrate and float in an indeterminate space. The mixing of colours is surprising: at the junction of blue and yellow, for example, a glowing margin of almost neon pink is generated. Fabian Miller’s works appear to fix liquid light, in which the viewer is aware of an illusionary three-dimensional space.
