Fabian Miller, an ardent Darwinist, began to wonder if his species of camera-less photographer was about to become extinct in this changing technological environment. His pre-emptive solution was to evolve and take a step towards digital photography via large-scale editioned multiple prints made in collaboration with the digital colour specialist John Bodkin. This is a significant change—he recognises that he is at a pivotal moment in photography’s history and wants to bring knowledge of the photochemical processes into the digital realm. In a decade from now, the idea of entering a darkroom to make images will probably seem quaint and archaic.

The Colour of Time by Garry Fabian Miller, from the essay ‘Time and Light’ by Nigel Warburton.

Black Dog, London 2010.
