Petworth Window 23 April 2000

The Petworth Windows disturbed me. All the crosses became a final death throw for religious imagery. In some of these pictures the cross is simple, pared down. A silent Quaker space. Other crosses have the heavy resonance of an iron cross worn by a German soldier in the war, something more in your face and disturbing. I was amazed by how you could modulate such a simple form to suggest a welcoming doorway or the power of the sword: something gentle. Open and giving or something altogether more unfriendly.
